Literacy – The Butterfly Lion

This half term, Chestnut class have been reading ‘The Butterfly Lion’ by Michael Morpurgo. The book is a fabulous story about a young boy who runs away from his boarding school. He meets an old woman, who tells him the story of Bertie, a young boy who lives on a compound in Africa. The story develops as we find out that Bertie rescues a white lion cub from a pack of vicious hyenas. However Bertie’s stubborn father sends the rare lion to the circus. Will Bertie and his new feline friend ever be reunited..? There’s only one way to find out!

Using the book as a stimulus, the children have been busy writing information texts based on the African Lion, examining why characters have acted in certain ways and composing setting descriptions based on the African Savannah. Call in to school to take a look at some of our fantastic work – we would be happy to show you!

Woodland improvements

This year the Eco-team are planning to improve the woodland area by the football pitch. They have lots of wonderful ideas and hopefully we will make the area a welcoming place for us to enjoy and a suitable habitat for our woodland friends.
First of all, we went on an exploration to see what was there already….

As you can see, there are lots of trees and shrubs and a little pathway to an opening.
Here are some of the ideas our Eco-warriors came up with…

Sam suggested a house for a hedgehog to protect them in winter.

Lola would like to add a frog house for our amphibian friends.

Mason would like to care for the spiders and build another Bug Hotel and Ella would like to make bird feeders and bird houses for our feathered friends.

If you can help in any way, please let us know.
